The 5 Step System of Jiu Jitsu, Chess, and Life

Jiu Jitsu, often described as a chess match on the mats, is a dynamic blend of strategy, skill, and anticipation. It's a delicate dance where opponents engage in a calculated exchange of moves, reactions, and tactics, mirroring the intricate dynamics of a chess game.

Just as a skilled chess player navigates the board, anticipating every move, a Jiu Jitsu athlete interprets and responds in accordance to the reaction and action of their opponent.

Within this response, the practitioner is bound by their knowledge, skill, vision, and physical limitations, but deploys strategic mastery to win the match.

In both Jiu Jitsu and chess, success hinges on understanding your opponent's actions, reactions, and inherent tendencies.

But these lessons aren't confined to the mats or the chessboard—they seamlessly translate into the intricate game of life. As you capture the essence of a chess match, you discover that conquering the challenges life throws your way demands similar strategic thinking:

  1. Make the First Move (take the fight to the ground):

    The opening move is crucial. In Jiu Jitsu, it's about initiating the engagement by taking the fight to the ground.

    Seizing initiative in life is key. Embracing the unknown, taking that first step, and venturing into new territories. Go first.

  2. Advance Your Position (pass the opponents guard):

    Similar to moving your pieces to dominate the board, advancing your position in Jiu Jitsu involves passing your opponent's guard (feet, knees, and hips) and gaining a favorable stance that limits damaging blows.

    Progressing in life requires pushing past comfort zones. Whether it's a new job or personal growth, advancing positions grants fresh perspectives. Take risks and always continue moving forward.

  3. Gain Control of the Center (pin and control your opponent):

    In chess, controlling the center of the board is strategic; in Jiu Jitsu, it's pinning and controlling your opponent's body to limit their options.

    Just as you pin and control your opponent on the mats, seizing control over life's circumstances empowers you to navigate your journey. You can’t win if you’re not in a position to win.

  4. Take Away Options (advance through a series of dominant pins):

    Just as chess players aim to restrict their opponent's moves by taking away pieces, Jiu Jitsu practitioners advance through a series of dominant pins to limit their adversary's choices.

    By focusing on a path aligned with your goals, and saying no to other opportunities and distractions, you move toward mastery. Stay on the path.

  5. Capture the King (submit your opponent):

    The ultimate objective. In Jiu Jitsu, it translates to submitting your opponent—gaining a position of control and forcing them to tap out.

    Capturing your goals in life requires dedicated pursuit, determination, and a relentless spirit. Be relentless.

In this intricate dance, success is a culmination of calculated choices, timely execution, and adapting to changing circumstances. Just as checkmating an opponent represents triumph in chess, achieving personal victories—whether in careers, relationships, or self-discovery—parallels submitting an opponent in Jiu Jitsu.
